As well as DNA testing for a variety of bee viruses & parasites, we also supply kits for other laboratories to test for Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae in bees and hive debris.
N.ceranae in particular is highly damaging and causes brood loss, reduced hive numbers resulting in lower honey production. High levels of both these organisms in a dual infection have shown to drastically shorten bee lifespan compared to infection by one or other species. High levels of these organisms have been detected in the Coromandel beehive losses of 2014/2015. Samples from other losses around the North Island have shown similarly high levels of both these Nosema species.
These qPCR kits and extraction kits can be sent internationally on blue ice.
